The Dream of GUNDAM x EVANGELION Is Real
Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX Announcement Trailer
Okay, maybe not quite the fantasy of Mobile Suit Gundam and Neon Genesis Evangelion coming together, but hear me out. Bandai Namco dropped a trailer yesterday showing off the next Gundam Series, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuxX. First you need to check out the teaser trailer –
The trailer is not just for a new series announcement, but specifically for a pre-screening of the next series as a theatrical “re-cut” similar to Demon Slayer and the Mugen Train arc. The film is set to release on January 17th in Japan with no set release of the TV series.
The new series features the titular Gundam GQuuuuuuX, piloted by Amate Yuzuriha nicknamed “Machu.” She gets swept up into a series of illegal battles between mobile suits called Clan Battles when she meets another girl named Nyaan. No mention in the announcement both on the official site or video indicates which Gundam universe/timeline GQuuuuuuX will take place in. The main Gundam is one of the more unique designs for a main character’s mech and doesn’t fit the design aesthetic of most timelines. However, there is a quick shot of a Zaku style Gundam hidden within the trailer. More mysteries to be unraveled as we approach release.
But did you see what else I see? Sunrise is going to do making the animation, but there is another studio involved. Studio Khara. That’s right folks, Anno Hideaki has attached himself to the project, and apparently is one of the writers of the series.
No, that doesn’t actually mean we are going to see Evangelion and Gundam fight in this series, but it is a welcome surprise to see another classic anime franchise that Anno is taking a shot at. This is in addition to some of his current ongoing work on Space Battleship 3199.
