Samurai Gunn 2 Early Access Announcement
Coming to Early Access on Steam this Summer
There is a brand new trailer out for Samurai Gunn 2, and it has quite a bit of new information. If you are unfamiliar with the original, Samurai Gunn is a local-multiplayer single-screen 2D fighter. Its a bloody mix of Super Smash Bros. Vs. Ninjas/Samurai. The original game is light on content & depth, but makes up for it in fun factor with crazy duels between ronin from the comfort of your couch. This new trailer, however, blows everything about the first game away.
The biggest change shown in the new trailer from the original is the updated visual style. In the first announcement trailer for Samurai Gunn 2, the game looked like more of the same, especially visually. Here we now have a bit of a tweak to the overall look of the sequel, but still well within the realm of 2D low detail pixel art. Comparing the revamped levels from the original game to their new counterpart really highlights how much has changed.
If you played Samurai Gunn back in 2013 at release you likely remember the greatest flaw in this game and many like it. It lacked online multiplayer. A number of indie games at the time were local-multiplayer only, including Towerfall and Nighogg. Coming to Samurai Gunn 2 is the surprising addition of online multiplayer. The feature is not surprising that the game should have it, but rather it is not common for a game made by such a small team would opt for the often difficult to implement multiplayer functionality. At least all the naysayers from 2013 can be silenced, and you can now play some Samurai Gunn with your friends online.
This new trailer of course is for the upcoming early access release on Steam this summer. Some folks might remember that the game was originally announced in 2019 for the Nintendo Switch. Fear not those who aren’t PC gamer, Samurai Gunn 2 is coming to the Switch at a later date. In a quick tweet, the release of the Switch version is revealed to be scheduled for when the game hits 1.0. No further date announced at this time.
The best thing about this new trailer is how much more this game looks like a true sequel rather than an base package upgrade to the first game. Obviously the singleplayer/co-op story mode was announced from the start, but the game still looked the same in the original switch announcement trailer. Samurai Gunn 2 now has a graphical upgrade in addition to the online multiplayer features et. al. If you love platforming fighting games, Samurai Gunn 2 should be something you keep your eye on this summer.
