Mobile Suit Gundam: Silver Phantom Pre-Order Trailer Revealed

The mega mecha franchise arrives in virtual reality this fall.

Over the weekend, Bandai-Namco put out a new trailer for their upcoming VR experience called Mobile Suit Gundam: Silver Phantom. It is an interactive anime for the Meta Quest 2 & 3, featuring a story set in the Universal Century Gundam timeline. Set in the year U.C. 0096, you play as a nameless protagonist working for a mercenary organization, piloting the titular gundam, not as a member of the Federation or Zeon.

From the newly released trailer and the Meta Quest Store listing, the experience is expected to be a “feature-length interactive cinematic story.” This presumably means it will be at least 90 minutes in length, not including the additional features not shown in the trailer. From the trailer, it looks like there will be a mix of traditional 2D animation in the classic Gundam style, while being mostly a 3D VR experience. The interactivity from the trailer was limited, but it showed some amount of controlling the Gundam, even if you aren’t fully piloting your mobile suit into battle.

Graphically, it looks more robust than the Attack on Titan VR game teased last week, but it also doesn’t look nearly as interactive. The operative word in the marketing is experience. This isn’t a Gundam VR game. This is a Gundam VR experience, and that thin slice of fans who love both Gundam and VR should temper their expectation. The Meta Quest Store page does demo an AR game as a part of the package, but it looks limited in scope. Check out the story trailer below.

The VR experience is scheduled to release later this year. It is currently listed at $15.99 for the pre-order price, and full price is at $17.99.
